Paying in a tab

Say you paid someone in a tab, record money that reached you, or, if you run the tab, record a payment between two others.

A tab is paid as a whole, not bill by bill. Everyone's balance adds up every bill the tab counts, and a payment in the tab moves money between two people towards their balances. TabApp doesn't move money: you pay the person yourself, then say so in the tab, and they confirm it when it arrives. A payment, on the tab's add button, gathers everyone you can pay or be paid by in one sheet.

How to add a payment in a tab

  1. Open the tab and press Add to this tab, the add button in the middle of the bar at its foot.
  2. Press A payment. The sheet Add a payment opens.
  3. Under Who did you pay?, press the person you paid. The Pay sheet opens on them, as it does on a bill: pay them, then press I've paid.
  4. Under Who paid you?, press the person who paid you. The Record sheet opens with them chosen: check the Amount, choose how it reached you, and press the button, such as Record 21.80 from Maya.

When you both owe and are owed in the tab, both lists are shown, the one with more money first. Closing Pay or Record comes back to the list; a payment made closes the sheet, and Balances shows it at once.

The same Pay, Record, Confirm and Remind are on each person's sheet in the tab's Balances (see A tab's balances). That is also where someone with no account pays from, since they have no add button.

How to record a payment between two others

Whoever runs the tab, its owner or an admin, also sees Between others: every amount still owed between two other people, such as Tom paid Priya, with what is still owed.

  1. In Add a payment, press the row under Between others.
  2. Check the Amount. It starts at what is still owed between them, and cannot be more.
  3. Choose how it was paid, and press the button, such as Record 76.40 from Tom to Priya.

It counts at once. The person paid can still say it did not reach them.

Worked example: settling up after Lisbon

The Lisbon weekend tab counts four bills, 377.40 in all. Priya is owed 122.20; Tom owes 76.40, Sam 24.00 and Maya 21.80, all of it to Priya.

Tom presses A payment. His sheet has one list, Who did you pay?, with Priya with 76.40. Priya's has one too, Who paid you?, with Maya 21.80, Tom 76.40 and Sam 24.00.

Maya started the tab, so she runs it. Her sheet has Who did you pay?, with Priya, and Between others, with Tom paid Priya at 76.40 and Sam paid Priya at 24.00. Tom hands Priya cash at the airport, and Maya records it: she presses Tom paid Priya, leaves the amount, chooses Cash and presses Record 76.40 from Tom to Priya. Tom is paid up, and Priya is still owed 45.80: 21.80 from Maya and 24.00 from Sam.

When Tom opens A payment again, it says "You're all square." and who still owes whom.

If something stops you

  • "Nothing to settle yet. Payments can be added once a bill is ready for payment." No bill in the tab counts yet. A bill counts once it is Ready for payment.
  • The amount is refused, such as "Tom owes Priya 76.40". A payment between others cannot be more than is still owed between them.
  • There is no Between others. Only the tab's owner and admins record payments between two other people.
  • A payment is greyed out. Adding needs a connection: with none, every choice on Add to this tab says "Needs a connection". A closed tab has no add button until it is reopened.
