A tab's balances
See where everyone in a tab stands, and open anyone's balance to see the bills and payments behind it and what would clear it.
A tab's Balances list where each person stands across every bill that counts: Owes, Is owed or paid up. A balance is what someone's share of the bills comes to, less what they paid for, with payments between people taken into account. The balances always add up to zero, and move whenever a bill or a payment is added; there is nothing to close or start first.
How to read the balances
- Open the tab and press Balances in its bar.
- Read each row: the person, a tick when they are paid up or a warning while money still has to move, and what they owe or are owed. Your own row says "(you)".
- Press a row to open that person's balance.
How to read one person's balance
The sheet is titled with their name, such as "Tom's balance", and says what they owe or are owed in the tab. From the top:
- What you can do. Pay and the amount, on the sheet of someone you owe; Record a payment and Remind, on the sheet of someone who owes you.
- Payments, newest first, with Confirm, Not received or Undo on the ones between you and them (see Paying in a tab).
- A table of each bill that counts, with what they Paid for it and their Share, and a Total row. A bill in another currency shows what they were billed and the rate beneath its name.
- The sum: their share, less what they paid and sent, plus what they received, comes to what they owe or are owed. The line beneath says what would clear it.
Someone who is owed because they paid more than their share is marked "Paid more than their share".
Worked example: the Lisbon weekend
Four bills count in the Lisbon weekend tab, 377.40 in all. Maya opens Balances:
| Person | Balance | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Priya | Is owed | 122.20 |
| Maya | Owes | 21.80 |
| Tom | Owes | 76.40 |
| Sam | Owes | 24.00 |
Maya presses Tom's row. His table:
| Bill | Paid | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Airbnb | - | 80.00 |
| Taxi | 24.00 | 8.00 |
| Dinner at Ramiro | - | 24.00 |
| Heathrow coffee | 17.40 | 5.80 |
| Total | 41.40 | 117.80 |
Beneath the coffee is the 5.00 he was billed in pounds, at the tab's rate. Tom paid 41.40 in all against a share of 117.80, so the sum reads "117.80 share - 41.40 paid = owes 76.40", and the line beneath it "No payments confirmed yet. Paying Priya 76.40 clears it."
Priya's sheet says "Paid more than their share" and "117.80 share - 240.00 paid = is owed 122.20". As Maya reads it: "No payments confirmed yet. It clears when Tom pays 76.40, Sam pays 24.00 and you pay 21.80."
If something stops you
- "Nothing to settle yet." No bill in the tab is Ready for payment, so there are no balances.
- "Everyone is paid up." Nobody owes anything. Whoever runs the tab is offered Close the tab.
- A row says someone is not in the tab. They are on a bill but hold no seat in the tab.
- The buttons on a sheet cannot be pressed. You are offline, and the sheet is read only until you reconnect.
