Adding bills and payments to a tab

Add a bill to a tab, move in one of your own, record a payment, or add a person, all from the add button at the foot of the tab.

Everything goes into a tab from Add to this tab, the add button in the middle of the tab's bar. A bill added there is set up like any other bill, and once it is Ready for payment it counts in the tab: its shares go into everyone's balance, and it is paid through the tab rather than on its own.

How to add to a tab

  1. Open the tab and press Add to this tab. A sheet titled Add to and the tab's name opens.
  2. Choose one:
    • Quick split: one amount, shared.
    • Scan a receipt: TabApp reads the receipt and you check it.
    • Itemised bill: people claim their items.
    • One of your bills: move in a bill of yours that stands on its own.
    • A payment: you paid someone, or were paid (see Paying in a tab).
    • A person: invite someone, or add a name.
  3. For a new bill, set it up as usual. It starts with everyone in the tab, paid by you, in the tab's currency; change any of it on the bill.
  4. When the bill is set up, make it Ready for payment. It then counts in the tab.

One of your bills lists the bills you made that are not in a tab. Press one to choose who on the bill is who in the tab, then move it. A bill that has payments stays on its own, and says so.

How a bill in a tab reads

A tab's Bills view lists its bills by day, newest first, each with its total. A bill that is still being set up is marked Not counted yet: it is in none of the tab's figures until it is Ready for payment. A bill in another currency counts at a rate locked for it, so balances do not move when exchange rates do; until it has a rate it is marked "Not counted yet: needs a rate".

Open a bill that counts and it says Part of the tab's name: "It is paid and reminded about in the tab, not on its own." It lists everyone on it with their share, and the strip at the foot gives Bill total, Paid by and your share. There is no Pay, Record or Remind on the bill itself: See balances in and the tab's name, at the foot, takes you to where it is settled.

Worked example: four bills and a brunch

In the Lisbon weekend tab, Priya adds the Airbnb, 240.00, as a Quick split, paid by her and shared by Priya, Maya and Tom. Tom adds the taxi, 24.00, the same way. Maya adds dinner at Ramiro, 96.00, after Sam has joined, so all four share it. Tom adds a coffee at Heathrow, 15.00 in pounds, which the tab counted as 17.40 at its locked rate of 1.16.

The four bills come to 377.40. Sam was on the dinner only, so of everything so far Sam owes 24.00, his quarter of the dinner.

Maya starts a fifth bill, Brunch, and has not made it Ready for payment yet. It sits in the Bills view marked Not counted yet, and nobody's balance moves until it is ready.

If something stops you

  • A bill is in the tab but nothing moved. It is Not counted yet: make it Ready for payment, or give it a rate if it is in another currency.
  • Each choice says "Needs a connection". Adding to a tab needs a connection.
  • "This bill has payments, so it stays on its own". A bill someone has paid on cannot be moved into a tab.
  • There is no Add to this tab. The tab is closed. Its owner can reopen it from Settings.
