Pay what you owe

Pay the person you owe in your own way, then say you have paid so they can confirm it arrived.

Once a bill is Ready for payment, it shows what you owe and who to. TabApp doesn't move money: you pay the person yourself, through their bank, a payment app or in cash, and then say in the app that you have paid. Your payment is Paid until the person you paid confirms it arrived, and your balance changes when they do.

How to pay what you owe

  1. Open the bill. Under You owe, each person you owe has a row with what is still to send them.
  2. Press Pay at the foot of the bill, or press the person's row. The sheet opens on the person you owe.
  3. Pay them. When they have saved a way of being paid, the sheet lists it: a link such as PayPal or Monzo opens with the amount filled in, and a bank detail is copied when you press it.
  4. Check the Amount. It starts at what you owe; change it to pay part of it.
  5. Press I've paid, or In cash if you handed them cash.

After you open a link, the sheet asks "Did you send it?", so come back and press I've paid once you have. Further down the bill, a section headed with your share lists what it is made of, with See balances beside it.

After you have paid

Your payment shows under You owe with a warning mark while it waits for the person you paid, and with a tick once they confirm it. Until then you can take it back: press the payment's row, then Undo.

If they say it has not arrived, the payment stops counting and the amount is owed again. Check with them, then pay again or take the payment back.

Worked example: Tom pays Maya

Maya paid the whole bill at Luigi's Trattoria, 77.66. Tom's share is 28.49: his Diavola, his part of the garlic bread, two Peroni and his part of the service.

Tom opens the bill and presses Pay. The sheet opens on Maya with 28.49. Maya has saved PayPal, so Tom presses PayPal, sends the money there, comes back and presses I've paid 28.49. The sheet's last line reads "TabApp doesn't move money. Maya confirms when it arrives." Once Maya confirms, Tom is paid up.

Had Tom only been able to send 20.00 that night, he would type 20.00 in Amount. The sheet says "8.49 will be left to pay." and the button reads I've paid 20.00. Afterwards the bill still shows 8.49 to send to Maya.

Had Maya paid 50.00 at the till and Tom 27.66, Tom's share would still be 28.49, so he would owe Maya only 0.83. The bill says "Your share is 28.49 and you paid 27.66 of the bill."

If something stops you

  • The sheet says they haven't added payment details. Ask them how they would like to be paid, or pay in cash and press In cash.
  • You typed more than you owe. The sheet says by how much. It is allowed, and the person you paid can confirm what arrived.
  • You are on the bill through a link, with no account. You can say you paid and take it back, for no more than you owe. Recording or confirming a payment needs an account.
  • The bill is in a tab. It is paid through the tab, not on the bill.
  • You have no connection. You can read the bill, and paying needs a connection.
