Service, tax, tip and discount
Add a service charge, tax, a tip or a discount to a bill, and choose whether each is shared by what people had or evenly.
An extra is something added to a bill on top of its items, or taken off it: a Service charge, Tax, a Tip or a Discount. Each extra is shared out between the people on the bill, either by what each person had or evenly, and the shares still add up to the total exactly. Only the organiser can change the extras; everyone on the bill can see them.
How to add an extra
- While the bill is being set up, press the add button in the middle of the bar at the foot of the bill, labelled Add to this bill.
- Choose Tip, tax or discount. The Extras screen opens, with a card for each kind of extra.
- Switch on the extra you want.
- Choose Percent or Amount, and type the figure. For a tip, press 10%, 12.5% or 15%, or choose Custom to type your own.
- Under Shared, choose By what you ordered or Evenly.
- Check the totals at the foot of the screen, then press Save.
Once a bill has an extra, it is listed under the items on the Items step. Press it to open Extras again. To take an extra off, switch it off and press Save; the toast that follows offers Undo.
What each extra does
- Service charge. A charge the venue added, as a percent of the items or as an amount.
- Tax. Added on top of the items, as a percent or an amount. If the prices on the receipt already include it, tick Prices already include tax: the tax is shown, and adds nothing to the total.
- Tip. A percent, a custom figure, or Round up. With a percent, Tip on chooses whether it is taken on the Items alone or on the Total with the other extras in it. Round up asks for the total you want to reach, under Round the total up to, and works out the tip that gets there.
- Discount. A voucher or money off, as a percent of the items or as an amount. A discount never takes anyone's share below nothing.
By what you ordered shares an extra in proportion to what each person had, so whoever had more pays more of it. Evenly gives everyone on the bill the same part.
When the bill came from a scanned receipt, the totals say what the receipt says, and by how much the bill differs from it. An extra read from the receipt is marked From receipt until you type over it.
Worked example: service at Luigi's
Maya, Tom, Priya and Alex had dinner at Luigi's Trattoria. The items come to 70.60. Maya switches on Service charge, leaves it at Percent, types 10 and keeps By what you ordered. The totals read: Items 70.60, Service (10%) 7.06, Total 77.66.
Each person pays service on what they had:
| Person | Items | Service | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maya | 17.00 | 1.70 | 18.70 |
| Tom | 25.90 | 2.59 | 28.49 |
| Priya | 17.50 | 1.75 | 19.25 |
| Alex | 10.20 | 1.02 | 11.22 |
Had Maya chosen Evenly, the 7.06 would be shared as 1.77, 1.77, 1.76 and 1.76, and Tom's share would be 27.67. The total does not divide into four, so the pennies left over go to the people listed first on the bill.
Had the table wanted to leave 80.00 in all, Maya would switch on Tip, choose Round up and type 80.00. The screen says the tip comes to 2.34, and the total is 80.00.
If something stops you
- Save is greyed out. An extra is switched on with no figure, a percent is over 100, or a round-up target is one the bill already reaches. The reason is given with the button.
- You cannot change anything. Only the organiser can change the extras. Everyone else sees which extras are on, how each is shared, and the totals.
- The bill is Ready for payment. Its totals are locked. The organiser can reopen it to change the extras.
