Split an item: Even, Units, Shares, Percent and Amount

Share one item between people in the way that fits it, from equal parts to exact amounts.

Most items belong to one person, and a tap on the item claims it. When an item was shared, the split sheet says how its price is divided. A split has five types: Even, Units, Shares, Percent and Amount. Whatever the type, the parts always add up to the item's price exactly, to the penny.

How to split an item

  1. On the bill's Split step, press the mark at the end of the item's row. The split sheet opens.
  2. Choose the type at the top of the sheet.
  3. Set each person's part. The line beneath the people says whether the parts add up, and what is left.
  4. Press Save.

Everyone, Just me and Clear fill the sheet in one press. Anyone on the bill can change their own part; the organiser can change everyone's.

The five types

  • Even. Tick the people who shared it, and each pays the same. One person ticked is still Even.
  • Units. For an item that is several of something, each person takes whole units. Units nobody takes stay unclaimed until someone does. Units is offered only when the item's quantity is more than one.
  • Shares. Give each person a whole number, and the price is divided in that ratio. Use it when someone had twice as much.
  • Percent. Give each person a percentage. They must add up to 100; Fill the rest gives what is left to the person whose part you were last in, or to you.
  • Amount. Give each person an exact amount. They must add up to the item's price; Fill the rest works here too.

Worked example: dinner at Luigi's

Maya, Tom, Priya and Alex had dinner at Luigi's Trattoria.

ItemPriceTypeWho pays what
Garlic bread6.00Even, all four ticked1.50 each
Peroni x315.60Units: Tom 2, Alex 1Tom 10.40, Alex 5.20
Tiramisu7.00Even, Priya and Alex ticked3.50 each

Tom's Diavola was his alone. Had Maya eaten a third of it, Shares would split it: Tom 2, Maya 1 gives Tom 9.33 and Maya 4.67. Fourteen pounds does not divide into thirds, so one penny goes to one person. The app always gives it to the same person for the same split, however it was entered.

Service of 10% is shared out after the items, in proportion to what each person had: Tom's 25.90 of items comes to 28.49 with service (see Service, tax, tip and discount).

If something stops you

  • Save is greyed out. The parts do not add up yet. The line above Save says by how much.
  • You cannot change someone else's part. Only that person or the organiser can. Their row shows a padlock.
  • The bill is Ready for payment. Its totals are locked. The organiser can reopen it to change a split.
