What TabApp does
TabApp shares a bill between the people who were there, works out who owes whom, and keeps track of what has been paid back.
TabApp shares a bill between the people who were there. Each person claims what they had, and the app works out every person's share to the penny. It then shows who owes whom, and keeps track of each payment until it is confirmed. TabApp does not move money itself: you pay each other in the usual way, and record it here.
How TabApp works
- Start a bill. Press the create button in the middle of the bar at the foot of the screen. A bill can be one amount shared out, a receipt you scan, or items you add by hand.
- Bring people in. Add people by name, or send them the bill's link. Someone with no account can open the link, take their seat and claim, with nothing to sign up for.
- Claim and split. Each person claims the items they had. An item that was shared is split between the people who shared it.
- Make it Ready for payment. The totals are locked, and each person can see what they owe and to whom.
- Pay and confirm. Someone who owes pays the person owed, outside the app, and records it. The person owed confirms it. When every balance is zero, the bill is Settled.
For more than one bill between the same people, such as a trip or a shared flat, a tab keeps them all in one running balance. A group holds a set of people and their tabs and bills.
What Home shows you
Home is where you stand across every bill and tab.
- You owe and You're owed are the totals across your bills and tabs, one figure for each currency. Amounts in different currencies are never added together.
- Needs your action lists what waits on you: a payment to confirm, an amount to pay, people who have not paid you yet, or items to claim.
- With nothing waiting, Home says Nothing needs you. and leads to Bills and Tabs.
The first time you open TabApp, Home says Nothing here yet. Split your first bill. with Quick split and Scan a receipt.
Worked example: dinner at Luigi's
Maya, Tom, Priya and Alex had dinner at Luigi's Trattoria, and Maya paid the whole bill.
| Who | Items | Share with 10% service |
|---|---|---|
| Maya | 17.00 | 18.70 |
| Tom | 25.90 | 28.49 |
| Priya | 17.50 | 19.25 |
| Alex | 10.20 | 11.22 |
The shares add up to the bill's total of 77.66 exactly. Maya paid all of it and her own share is 18.70, so the other three owe her 58.96 between them.
Once the bill is Ready for payment, Maya's Home shows You're owed 58.96, from 3 people, and a row under Needs your action that says "Tom and 2 others have not paid 58.96". Tom's Home shows You owe 28.49, to 1 person, and a row that says "You owe Maya 28.49" with Pay.
If something stops you
- Home shows nothing owed. Amounts count once a bill is Ready for payment. While a bill is still open, people can claim, and nothing is owed yet.
- Someone says they paid you, and You're owed has not moved. It moves once you confirm the payment.
