Split your first bill

Start a bill from the create button, as a quick split, a scanned receipt or items added by hand, or start a tab.

Every bill starts from the create button, in the middle of the bar at the foot of the screen. It opens Start something, which offers four ways to begin. Choose the one that fits what you have in front of you: one amount, a receipt, or a list of items.

How to start a bill

  1. Press the create button in the bar. Start something opens.
  2. Choose one of the four:
    • Quick split: one amount, split between people.
    • Scan a receipt: take a photo and the items fill in.
    • Itemised bill: add items by hand.
    • New tab: for a trip or a household, settled as one.
  3. Fill in the screen it opens, as below.

New bill on the Bills list opens the same choice. To close it without starting anything, close the sheet.

How a quick split goes

A quick split is the fastest way, for when everyone shares one amount.

  1. Under How much?, set the Currency and enter the Amount.
  2. Change What for? if you like. It starts as a name for the time of day.
  3. Under Who's in?, pick the people. You are in already. Type in Search or add a name to look for someone, or to add a new name.
  4. Set Paid by. It starts as you.
  5. Leave it on Even, or choose Different amounts and enter each person's amount.
  6. Press Done. The bill is made Ready for payment straight away, and opens where people pay.

How an itemised bill goes

  1. Fill in the Title, Date and Currency.
  2. Press Add items, and add each item from the receipt.
  3. The bill then has four steps, People, Items, Split and Review, where you add people, they claim what they had, and you make it Ready for payment.

Worked example: Luigi's as a quick split

Maya paid 77.66 at Luigi's Trattoria and wants to share it evenly between the four of them.

She presses the create button, chooses Quick split, enters 77.66 as the Amount and Luigi's Trattoria under What for?. She picks Tom, Priya and Alex under Who's in?, and leaves Paid by as herself and the split on Even.

The line above Even and Different amounts reads "4 ways: 19.42, 19.42, 19.41, 19.41". 77.66 does not divide into four exactly, so two people pay a penny more, and the form says so: the odd pennies go to the first people in the list. The four amounts still add up to 77.66.

Had they each claimed what they ate instead, as an itemised bill with 10% service, Tom's share would be 28.49 and Alex's 11.22 (see A bill item by item).

If something stops you

  • Done cannot be pressed. The reason is written beneath it. Enter an amount and pick at least one person; under Different amounts, the amounts have to add up to the total.
  • The Tab row. When you have an open tab, a Tab row lets you put the new bill in it. Leave it as it is for a bill on its own.
