A bill in another currency
Enter a bill in the currency it was paid in, and read your share in your own currency beside it.
A bill is in one currency, the one it was paid in, and every item, share and payment on it is in that currency. When it is not yours, TabApp shows your own figure in your home currency beside it, marked with "~" because it is read at today's rate and is not what you pay. Nothing on the bill is converted: you pay in the bill's currency, and your bank's rate may differ.
How to choose a bill's currency
- When you start a bill, the Currency field starts in the currency of where your phone says you are, or else your home currency. "From where you are. Change it if that is wrong." says it came from your location.
- Press it to change it. Search by code, name or country, such as "EUR", "euro" or "Portugal", and press the currency. Your home currency and the ones you chose lately are at the top.
- To change it later, open the bill's Settings and press Currency. The amounts stay as they are, read in the new currency.
Only the organiser changes a bill's currency, and only until the bill is Ready for payment.
How to read a bill in your currency
- On a bill in another currency, the strip above the items shows Bill total, Unclaimed and Your share, with your share beneath it in your home currency.
- Press the strip to open Currency on this bill: both currencies side by side, the rate, and when it was fetched.
- To see your home currency first on every such bill, switch on Always show my currency, in that sheet or in Me. The strip is then tinted and leads with your currency.
Your home currency is set in Me, as Home currency.
Worked example: dinner in Lisbon
Maya's home currency is the British Pound. In Lisbon she starts Dinner at Ramiro, 96.00 in Euro, and Maya, Tom, Priya and Sam share it equally: 24.00 each.
Her strip shows Your share 24.00, and beneath it ~£20.69. Its sheet opens on "This bill is in Euro." and "Your currency is British Pound.", with the rate 1 EUR = 0.86210 GBP. The ~£20.69 is only a reading: her share is 24.00 in Euro, and that is what is paid.
If something stops you
- "Rate unavailable". No rate could be fetched just now, so amounts are shown in the bill's currency only. Nothing on the bill depends on it.
- "This bill is ready for payment. Reopen it to change the currency." A ready bill's totals are locked. The organiser can reopen it.
- "Only the organiser can change this." Ask whoever started the bill.
- A bill in a tab that settles in another currency. The tab counts it at a rate of its own, locked when the bill joined (see A tab's locked rate).
