Delete a bill and bring it back

Delete a bill nobody has paid on, restore it from Recently deleted within 30 days, or hide a bill from your own lists instead.

The organiser can delete a bill that has no payments on it. A deleted bill goes to the trash, where it is there for nobody: everyone on it loses access. For 30 days its organiser can restore it, just as it was. A bill with payments is a record of money that moved, so it cannot be deleted, only hidden.

How to delete a bill

  1. Open the bill and press Bill settings at the top.
  2. Under This bill, press Delete bill. The line beneath it says what deleting does.
  3. The bill closes, and a toast says it was deleted, with Undo.

If the bill is in a tab that people have paid in, deleting it changes the tab's balances, so you are shown what it changes first, and asked. In a tab, the tab's owner and admins can delete a bill too.

How to bring a deleted bill back

  1. Open Me and press Recently deleted.
  2. Find the bill. Each one says how many days are left to restore it.
  3. Press Restore.

The bill comes back as it was: its items, its state and everyone on it. A bill deleted from a tab goes back into that tab while the tab is open. A bill deleted from a group comes back on its own.

Delete forever removes a bill for good, straight away. It asks first, because it cannot be undone. Recently deleted also lists tabs you deleted, with the bills that went with them.

Hiding a bill instead

Hide from my home, under This bill in the bill's settings, takes a bill off your own lists and changes nothing for anyone else. Anyone on a bill can hide it, once they neither owe nor are owed on it. A hidden bill's settings offer Show on my home again.

Worked example: a bill made twice

Maya made the bill at Luigi's Trattoria twice by mistake. Nobody has paid on the spare copy, so she opens its Bill settings and presses Delete bill. The line beneath says: "Everyone loses access. You can restore it for 30 days."

Under Me, Recently deleted now lists the spare copy with its total, 77.66, and "30 days left to restore". Had she deleted the wrong one, Restore would bring it back with every claim on it.

The copy she kept is Ready for payment, and Tom has said he paid his share. Its settings now say "This bill has payments. Hide it instead." Tom cannot hide it yet either. His 28.49 still counts as owed until Maya confirms his payment, so he is told "You still owe on this bill. Settle up before hiding it."

If something stops you

  • Delete bill is greyed out. The bill has payments, or was settled in its tab or group. The reason is given with the button. You can hide it instead.
  • There is no Delete bill. Only the organiser can delete a bill, or in a tab, the tab's owner and admins.
  • Recently deleted is empty. Only a bill's organiser sees it there, and only for 30 days after it was deleted.
  • Nothing is listed with no connection. Deleted bills and tabs are listed once you are back online.
