Invite links, and resetting one
Share the link to a bill, a tab or a group, send someone a link of their own, and reset a link that went to the wrong place.
Every bill, tab and group has one shared link. A bill's link lets anyone who has it pick a seat, with no account. A tab's or a group's link lets them ask to join, which needs an account. A person can also be sent a link of their own, which opens their seat alone. Resetting a shared link makes a new one, and the old one stops working.
How to share a link
- Open the share sheet: on a bill, Share link on the People step; in a tab or a group, Invite people on its People.
- The sheet, titled for what it invites to, such as Invite to Luigi's Trattoria, shows a QR code and the link.
- Let someone point their camera at the code, press Copy beside the link, or press Share link to send it from your phone.
Beneath, the sheet shows who has Joined: and who is still waiting. On a bill it says "Anyone with this link can pick a seat."; on a tab, "Joining a tab needs an account. Anyone with this link sees its name, who is in it and what it has spent, and can ask to join."
How to send someone a link of their own
- On a bill, the organiser presses Text someone on the share sheet, chooses a person with a phone number or email, reads the message and presses Send. The link in it opens that person's seat. A person is sent an invite once a day at most.
- In a tab, whoever runs it presses the person's row in People, then Send an invite. The sheet, Invite Sam for example, takes a phone number or an email; Send invite sends their link. Once they have one, Share their link hands it to your phone instead. The link opens the tab as that person with no account.
How to reset a link
- On the share sheet, press Reset link. In a tab's People, press Reset beside Invite link.
- Read what it does, and press Reset link. Cancel leaves the link as it is.
What a reset does depends on what it is for:
- A bill: "Old links stop working. People with an account stay on the bill. Guests lose their seat, keep what they claimed, and must rejoin with the new link."
- A tab: "The old link stops working straight away, and so does each person's own link. Everyone already in the tab stays in it."
- A group: "The old link stops working straight away. Everyone already in the group stays in it."
Only the organiser of a bill, and whoever runs a tab or a group, can reset its link or send someone theirs. A single person's tab link can be replaced on its own with New link on their invite sheet.
Worked example: Luigi's and the Lisbon weekend
Maya opens the share sheet for Luigi's Trattoria, titled Invite to Luigi's Trattoria. Tom has joined, and the sheet reads "Waiting: Priya and Alex". She shares the link in the group chat, and Priya picks her name.
Alex never opens chat messages, so Maya puts his number on his seat, presses Text someone, chooses Alex and reads the message before pressing Send:
Maya added you to "Luigi's Trattoria" on TabApp as Alex. See what you had and what you owe:
followed by his link.
In the Lisbon weekend tab, Sam has no account. Maya presses his row in People, then Send an invite, types his number and presses Send invite. The sheet says "Invite on its way to Sam." Sam later forwards the message by mistake, so Maya opens his sheet again and presses New link: "Sam has a new link. The old one no longer works." The tab's shared link, and everyone else's, are left as they were.
If something stops you
- There is no Reset link. Only the organiser of the bill, or whoever runs the tab or group, can reset it.
- Reset link and Send are greyed out. You have no connection. Both need one.
- The sheet says "Connect to get a link." The bill was made on this device and has not reached TabApp yet. Connect, and the link appears.
- Someone's row cannot be chosen under Text someone. It has no phone number or email. Add one in People.
- There is no share sheet on a Draft. A bill nobody else has been given is a Draft; pressing Share link on its People step the first time opens it to others.
